Misión a México

As we all know, service is an enormous component of what we do here in la Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica. As a Spanish honor society, we think it is very important to reach out and serve not just in our community, but across borders in actual Spanish speaking countries. I'm excited to say that we were able to take the words from our Mission Statement and put them to action in this most recent project.

Over Thanksgiving Break, SHH members collected school supplies and toiletries. Some were old notebooks that had been bought at the start of many school years past and then never touched. Some were freshly purchased pencil cases, deodorants and lotions. By and by, SHH collaborated to ensure that we could create a sizable donation to give to our partners, Mission to Mexico.

Mission to Mexico is a charitable organization that works with low-income children in Nuevo Laredo, México. Every few months, the Mission visits the community there to bring gifts and donations. They also sponsor individual children in order to financially support their education from primary school to university. Although we couldn't make the trip ourselves, SHH was able to partner with Rachel and Melanie Fannin who brought our donations of school supplies, toiletries, and holiday cards to the children of the community.

Members hard at work decorating boxes that held the school supples. We couldn't do too much decorating though–we had to make sure the content would be readily accessible for Customs.

Officers Sabrina and Sariah apparently love to wrap presents. Who knew?

We had a great time getting the donations ready, as you can tell from this picture.

We were able to fill up 9 shoeboxes with pens, pencils, notebooks, folders, kleenexes, toiletries and other assorted materials. As well as create post cards to our new pen pals! All of this was accomplished in the space of just a few days.

Congratulations SHH Members! This looks like a Misión Cumplida!

P.S. Huge shout out to the foreign committee. They were instrumental in putting this whole mission together.
